Healthcare Services |
Originally begun in 1989 as part of Mercy Hospital,
this outpatient program provides culturally sensitive services from its
clinic location, mobile van and 11 other sites throughout the Laredo community.
PHCP seeks to bring to dignity the medically disenfranchised and the poorest and most isolated people in the community by providing equitable access to healthcare, healthcare education, and much needed social services. In 2003, PHCS provided 30,000 individual encounters to more than 10,000 people.

- Women's Health Services - prenatal care, an obstetrics
hotline, cancer screenings, dysphasia, GYN referrals
- Children's Health Services - immunizations, school
physicals, physician referrals
- General Medicine - chronic illnesses, acute episodes
- Health Education - disease-specific preventive health
guidelines that allow people to become proactively involved in their
own care
- Diabetes Center - eye and foot exams, glucose equipment,
routine physician exams, nutrition/physical therapy, pharmacy counseling
and diabetes education classes
- Medication Assistance -pharmaceuticals for a small
co-payment
- Cancer Assistance Program - provides doctor visits
and medications to uninsured cancer patients in collaboration with a
local oncologist
- Promotores Program - outreach and education case
management program utilizing Promotores (certified community outreach
educators) to inform patients and the public about issues relating to
their own individual health (including preventive measures and disease
management)
- Social Services - social workers and case managers
assist patients with referrals and/or follow-up
- Advocacy - for the needs of the medically underserved
