The beginning

The Sisters of Mercy came to Laredo in 1894 to live among and serve people in need, a mission that has continued for 100 years. Through a variety of ministries, the sisters have provided care and assistance to community residents as well as to persons who live in the colonias and rural communities surrounding Laredo.
Although the sisters' Laredo ministries have been multifaceted, the most predominant over the years has been healthcare. As sponsors of Laredo's first hospital, the Sisters of Mercy led the development of a respected healthcare system that has served Laredo for more than a century
Today
The sisters continue their commitment of service to Laredo through Mercy Ministries of Laredo. This outreach network includes Mercy Clinic, the Casa de Misericordia domestic violence shelter and the Lamar Bruni Vergara Education Center.
Mercy Clinic also offers healthcare services via the Mercv Mobile Clinic, a medical van, which visits four inner city locations and eight Webb County colonias four times a week.
Casa de Misericordia is Laredo’s only domestic violence shelter. It also includes the Lamar Bruni Vergara Education Center, which provides to victims of domestic abuse and the general Laredo community, education, activities, support, and assistance for transition to self-sustained living. |
